Naming Project
April 4th, 2008 Dina at Wordfeeder.comBack at my old corporate job, we copywriters often had to work on what some in the business call a “naming project.”
I can’t even tell you how many products, brands and customer incentive programs I’ve been called upon to bestow with a name. Things like a new clothing line for preteens… a brand of mini remote-control racing cars. More baby coordinate patterns than I care to mention. A new line of outdoor play toys. A “credit card” for kids. The list goes on and on.
Well, today I’ve got a naming project that I need your help on. Help me find a cool and respectable-sounding moniker for this little guy:
So far we’ve called him Seamus, Boomer, Charlie, Rusty, and today we were contemplating Cosmo. Then of course you have the all-purpose “Buddy” which is what we seem to call him in general.
If you’re interested in helping give a poor nameless pup something to answer to… help us out here. But just know that he won’t always look like this. They told us at the shelter that he’s either full or half Australian Cattle Dog. (Quite a head on that thing, eh?)
Your help is appreciated!

Dina,
Do you remember the dog on the show “Frasier”? He was a Jack Russell Terrier named “Eddie”. This fine hound reminds me of a Little Eddie.
In the alternative, I’d suggest Jacques, Jocko, Russell, Napoleon, and Sigmund.

Hi David,
Yes, he does look a bit like Eddie, we thought so, too. Thanks for the names… it’s funny you suggested “Jacques” because that’s what his name was listed as (although he’d only had that name for just a few hours).
There’s no telling what he’ll grow up to look like. They told us at the shelter that he was at least half, if not full Australian Cattle Dog.
Those dogs don’t look like Jack Russels… although I think I’d be pretty pleased if he was at least half Jack Russell. Then I know he’d grow up to be a good-looking boy!
If I had more property, we’d have a lab as far as I’m concerned. They’re my favorite! But you’re right, I think my little guy is going to be a fine hound.

Dina,
he has such a dear, sweet face. I want him to have a really special name.
He has such an “old soul” kind of look in his eyes…how old is he?
April 4th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
so I like Charles and not Charlie
Seamus is good, Hamish is the Scots equivalent - of course you could just call him James,
Henry
Hank (as in Hank the Cow Dog)
Clif
or Heathclif
we’ll keep thinking, “think, think, think…”

Hi Cynthia…
Thanks for the ideas… I like your thought about him looking like an old soul. I could tell right away that he wasn’t going to be goofy. This is maybe why we can’t figure out what to call him, like you said. He seems highly intelligent… as though a name like Boomer could be potentially insulting (although it suits MY personality just fine).
He’s 11 weeks old… just a baby! Maybe he’s seen some tough times in his short life. He was rescued from a kill shelter in Halifax, Virginia.

I’m pretty sure he’s not purebred ACD. His head looks more like a daschund or a greyhound with that gentle look and round eyes. I had a cattledog once named Bondi for Bondi beach in Australia. (That’s a long I, at least as we said it.) I thought that was a cool name.
Good luck!

Hi Lisa,
Yeah, at the shelter they had said they thought he was a mix. I love his “gentle” look and am hoping that it’s not just puppy eyes. :) If he were part Dachsund that could make for a squat little Mighty Dog.
Today his name is Rascal. (?)
Thanks for coming by!

I like Mortimer. It doesn’t necessarily roll off the tongue, but it would make him seem sophisticated and if you take him to the dog park, there will be no confusion as to which dog you are calling.

Mark,
That’s pretty funny. I was actually thinking that if I call out “Come here, Buddy!” I’ll have the whole dog park chasing after me.
We tried out Mortimer but he had no reaction, sorry. ;)
At some point in the last two days his name was Cody. I’ve taken to calling him Piggie because of his round belly and stubby little legs.
Keep them coming, everyone! Mark, thanks for the comment.

Well … ? Is “Rascal” the winner?
April 9th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Hi David,
Well, so far it’s been Rascal, but I’m pretty sure he has no idea what his name is. So, we’re still open to ideas.
I tried to call him Cody for a day. But I know a bird named Kobe and a couple of kids named Corey… so it wasn’t flowing so easily.
It’s been six days, and so far he doesn’t seem to mind not having a name. “Come here” works well for now. He’s learning to sit, give paw, and fetch the ball. I’m a proud mama.

Dina,
My 5 year old Black Lab is named Kobe.

David,
Kobe and Bear are great names. :) Several years ago, I lived in a house with a wonderful black lab puppy named Toby. I remember how he used to sit up so proudly with his tail wagging fiercely when I arrived home. He was really a sweet boy. Thanks for coming by to talk “dog” with me!
