Article Marketing Tips from the Copywriting Trenches
November 15th, 2007 Dina at Wordfeeder.comArticle marketing is way of marketing your business online by writing and syndicating articles that position you as an expert in your field. With so much information to absorb on the Web, it’s tough to catch people’s attention, let alone hold it. If you’re looking to establish a client base, short, salesy ads simply won’t do. You need to develop a relationship with your readers, slowly. You need to win their loyalty by sounding like you really know what you’re talking about (because you DO!), and by getting out there and being seen.
Think of it from the reader perspective. Let’s say you’re doing some online research on hot tubs. You want one for your home, but first you must gather the facts. So a-Googling you go, and in your travels you come upon not one, not two, but about 25 different articles from the same person. The articles are intelligently written and they tell you exactly what you need to know. The best location for a hot tub, the ideal water temperature, how often to clean your hot tub, what features and options are available… things like that.
At the bottom of every article is a link that takes you to this person’s Web site, where you’ll find a full selection of great looking hot tubs. But still, you haven’t quite made up your mind whether to buy. You need some time to digest all of this knowledge - so you hop on said person’s mailing list and shut it down for the night.
Some time passes, life happens, and you temporarily “forget” about hot tubs. But then, ping, an email arrives and it’s from the hot tub expert. He has some more great insider tips for you - and suddenly you’re all hot and bothered again about having that hot tub installed. You pick up the phone and dial the 1800 number on the website.
Now let’s flip the perspective around again. Pretend you’re the person who owns the hot tub company. Do you see how publishing information-rich articles on the web helps to grow a client base and get your name “out there?” The secret is NOT to publish one, two, five, or even twenty articles… but to treat this as an ongoing method for exposure and to come up with fresh content a MINIMUM of once a month, and submit it to SEVERAL key places on the web.
For something like article marketing, it’s worth finding a partner to keep you committed to the task. The key people for the project should be:
1. A copywriting professional who can crank out intelligent content in a relatively short period of time and for a price that won’t break your bank. Hourly rates vary, but I will tell you from being “on the inside” that a good web article should take no more than 2 hours to craft about 600 to 800 words.
2. A virtual assistant. This is essentially a jacked-up version of the traditional admin assistant, but with a few plusses - said person should know their way around the web and electronic media.
Now, I understand that the new business owners among us may not feel quite comfortable assembling a power team just yet. If you can write well, and have the time for it, kick off the article marketing effort on your own. Grab a buddy (colleague) who can help in some area of article marketing that you don’t feel like managing yourself.
Maybe you want to write the articles, but searching out and submitting to various article directories just doesn’t seem to fit into your scheme. So then hire someone else to handle that portion of the work. Or, maybe you have enough stamina for ONE article that you share with your ezine readers… but you can’t muster up the time or energy to publish four more articles on the article sites. Or… perhaps you enjoy being creative, but you’re not an organizer or planner. Summon the services of the aforementioned virtual assistant or marketing professional who can develop and keep you focused on your monthly article marketing goals.
My copywriting website, Wordfeeder.com, enjoys high-placed rank on Google.com and other search engines. I also attract many intelligent and enterprising individuals who call upon me to create their website copy and online articles for them.
The real *secret* to Wordfeeder.com’s article marketing success is:
1. My copywriting articles are top notch- and yes, I share a ton of free information.
2. I just went ahead and started writing and publishing articles - consistently, and over a long period of time.
I promise, you can do the same for your own business.
Best of luck with your online article marketing effort!
