Examples of Lazy Gardening

Creating raised garden beds

Raised beds require more work up front, it’s true. But once you set them up, you’ll have a plant-ready space that makes garden-starting quick and easy. After a few years of using the same beds, you might check for wood rot and replace old, worn garden boxes. But for now — raised garden beds are the ultimate lazy gardener’s trick.

Starting with good quality soil

Your garden will get off to a good start with rich, loamy soil. Call up local nurseries to see if they sell planting soil in bulk. The more mineral rich and optimally balanced your soil, the more readily your garden plants will thrive, and resist pests, mold and disease. Your garden soil will last several summers, with minimal supplementing using organic fertilizer or composted mulch.

Mulching or adding wood chips

Weeds are the bane of a lazy gardener’s existence. Keep them at bay when you layer on mulch or wood chips after putting your plants into the ground. Wood chips and mulch also help your garden beds retain moisture and warmth so your plants can thrive in changing weather without a lot of help.

Choosing lower maintenance plants

Hardy, disease-resistant plants make the best additions to your lazy garden. Cherry tomatoes, kale, rosemary and lavender won’t require a lot of tending if you’ve started with good soil. Plants that come back every year like rhubarb, horseradish and asparagus also make good lazy garden choices.

Companion planting

Companion planting greatly cuts down on the amount of pest control needed to maintain your garden plants. Plant basil and garlic near tomatoes to ward off pests and blight. Grow marigolds and nasturtium flowers close to cucumbers and beans to deter bugs.

Lazy gardening does require some planning and prepwork up front. But, once you do it you’ll be set up for success growing veggies and herbs to enjoy all warm season. Share this info with your readers using the gardening PLR listed below!
